  • Bill has provisions for stringent punishment and faster trial in rape cases.

KEY POINTS OF BILL :

  • Death Penalty for Rape: Capital punishment for those convicted of rape if their actions result in the victim’s death or leave her in a vegetative state.
  • Time-Bound Investigations and Trials: Investigations into rape cases must be concluded within 21 days of the initial report.
  • Fast-Track Courts: Establishment of special courts dedicated to handling cases of sexual violence.
  • Aparajita Task Force: Creation of a specialised task force at the district level, headed by a deputy superintendent of police. This task force will focus on investigating cases of rape and other atrocities against women and children.
  • Stricter Penalties for Repeat Offenders: Life imprisonment for repeat offenders, with the possibility of the death penalty.
  • Protection of Victims’ Identities: Provisions to protect the identities of victims, ensuring their privacy and dignity during the legal process.

Penalties for Delaying Justice: Penalties for police and health officials who fail to act promptly or tamper with evidence.

Growth in Coal Production

Current Context : The country’s coal production rose by 7.12 per cent to 370.67 million tonne from April to August.

  • The coal production for 2024-25, has significantly increased to 67 MT, compared to 346.02 MT during the same period in FY 2023-24.

ABOUT COAL :

  • Coal is a fossil fuel that has played a pivotal role in the global energy landscape for centuries.
  • It is primarily composed of carbon, along with varying amounts of hydrogen, sulfur, oxygen, and nitrogen. The exact composition depends on the type of coal and its stage of formation.

TYPES OF COAL:

  • Anthracite : The highest grade, with the highest carbon content and energy density.
  • Bituminous : A medium-grade coal used widely in electricity generation and steel production. It has a high carbon content but lower than anthracite.
  • Sub-bituminous: Lower carbon content compared to bituminous coal, used primarily in electricity generation.
  • Lignite: Also known as brown coal, it has the lowest carbon content and is used mainly for power generation in regions where other types of coal are less accessible.

Windfall Tax

Current Context : The Indian government has announced a reduction in the windfall tax on domestically-produced crude oil from Rs 2,100 to Rs 1,850 per tonne.

ABOUT WINDFALL TAX

  • A Windfall Tax is a type of tax that is levied on companies or individuals who have unexpectedly and/or dramatically gained large profits, often due to external factors beyond their control.
    • It is commonly levied on industries such as oil, gas, and mining.
    • The purpose is to capture a portion of the extraordinary profits that companies make and redistribute it for public good.
    • It is a strategic measure to promote transparency and fairness and responsible economic practices in the energy industry.
  • The windfall tax on crude oil producers was introduced in July 2022. Further it was extended to cover exports of gasoline, diesel, and aviation fuel as private refiners sought to capitalize on favorable refining margins abroad rather than selling locally.
  • The tax rates are reassessed every 2 weeks.
