Growth in Coal Production

Current Context : The country’s coal production rose by 7.12 per cent to 370.67 million tonne from April to August.

  • The coal production for 2024-25, has significantly increased to 67 MT, compared to 346.02 MT during the same period in FY 2023-24.

ABOUT COAL :

  • Coal is a fossil fuel that has played a pivotal role in the global energy landscape for centuries.
  • It is primarily composed of carbon, along with varying amounts of hydrogen, sulfur, oxygen, and nitrogen. The exact composition depends on the type of coal and its stage of formation.

TYPES OF COAL:

  • Anthracite : The highest grade, with the highest carbon content and energy density.
  • Bituminous : A medium-grade coal used widely in electricity generation and steel production. It has a high carbon content but lower than anthracite.
  • Sub-bituminous: Lower carbon content compared to bituminous coal, used primarily in electricity generation.
  • Lignite: Also known as brown coal, it has the lowest carbon content and is used mainly for power generation in regions where other types of coal are less accessible.

MAJOR COAL PRODUCING REGIONS IN INDIA :

  1. Jharkhand : Jharia, Bokaro and Dhanbad.
  2. Chhattisgarh : Korba, Raigarh and Bastar.
  3. Odisha : Talcher,Sambalpur and Bolangir
  4. Madhya Pradesh : Satpura, Bilaspur and Kanhan
