DPS Flamingo Lake

Current Context: The Maharashtra State Wildlife Board has declared Delhi Public School(DPS) Flamingo Lake in Navi Mumbai a Conservation Reserve, marking the first wetland connected to the Thane Creek Flamingo Sanctuary to get such protection.

Key Highlights

  • Location: Navi Mumbai, Maharashtra
  • Size: 30 acres
  • Importance: Vital feeding and resting ground for migratory flamingos from Thane Creek, especially during high tide.
  • Environmental Concerns: Blocked tidal inlets led to flamingo deaths; pipes now realigned to restore flow.
  • Restoration: 60% of algae cleared; flamingos have started returning.

Future Risk: Wetland loss may increase bird strike risk near Navi Mumbai International Airport.
