Current Context: The 11th  BRICS Parliamentary Forum was held in Brasilia, Brazil on 4–5 June 2025, bringing together legislators from all ten member countries; India has been entrusted to host the Twelfth Forum in 2026.

About BRICS Parliamentary Forum

  • Objective: Platform for legislative collaboration on issues such as terrorism, artificial intelligence, and global peace.
  • Inception: First convened in 2015 during Russia’s chairmanship in Moscow.
  • Membership: Parliaments of Brazil, Russian Federation, India, China, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Indonesia, and the United Arab Emirates.
  • Next Host: India in 2026, chaired by the Speaker of the Lok Sabha.

BRICS Grouping

  • Formation: Coined as “BRIC” in 2001 by British economist Jim O’Neill; formal group established in 2009(Brazil, Russian Federation, India, China), with South Africa joining in 2010.
  • Recent Expansion: Saudi Arabia, Iran, Ethiopia, the United Arab Emirates, and Egypt joined in 2024; Indonesia became a full member in January 2025.
  • Membership Today: Ten major emerging economies representing over 41 percent of global gross domestic product (purchasing power parity) and half the world’s population.
