World Hepatitis Day

28 July is observed as World Hepatitis Day

  • Celebrated to raise awareness about hepatitis, a group of infectious diseases known as hepatitis A, B, C, D, and E.
  • Goal : to promote hepatitis prevention, testing, and treatment while also showing support for people impacted by the disease.
  • Theme : It’s time for action
  • This date was chosen to honour the birthday of Dr. Baruch Blumberg, the Nobel Laureate who discovered the hepatitis B virus (HBV) and developed a diagnostic test and vaccine for it.

About Hepatitis

  • Hepatitis is an inflammation of the liver, often caused by viral infections but also due to other factors such as alcohol consumption, certain medications, and autoimmune diseases.
  • Types : Hepatitis A, B, C, D, and E.
  • Symptoms : fatigue, bloating, pain, inflammation, weight loss, dark urine, clay-coloured stools, jaundice, loss of weight, weakness.
