Why in news?

  • World Handicapped day also known as the International Day of Persons with disabilities (IDPWD) is observed every year on 3rd December globally.

More about World Handicap Day

  • The day is marked and observed to support critical issues which are related to the inclusion of persons with disabilities.
  • The IDPWD day was proclaimed in 1992 by the United Nations General Assembly.
  • The theme for 2021 is “Leadership and participation of persons with disabilities toward an inclusive, accessible and sustainable post-COVID-19 world.”
  • The day is celebrated to promote the rights and well-being of persons with disabilities in all spheres of society and development, and to increase awareness of the situation of persons with disabilities in every aspect of political, social, economic and cultural life.
