Recently, Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations released the Statistical Yearbook

  • FAO’s “World Food and Agriculture 2024 Statistical Yearbook” provides insights into the global food and agriculture landscape.
  • Agriculture’s share in global GDP has remained stable at around 4% since 2000.
  • Agriculture employed 26% of the global workforce (892 million people) in 2022, down from 40% in 2000.
  • India had the largest agricultural workforce in 2022 (226 million people).
  • The Americas and Europe are the largest exporters of cereals, while Asia is the largest importer.s
  • India is the largest producer of milk (23% of global share in 2022) and the second-largest producer of sugarcane.
  • Global hunger affected 9.1% of the population (733 million people) in 2023, with higher food insecurity among women.
  • FAO, established in 1945, is a UN specialized agency focused on defeating hunger (SDG 2).
  • FAO has 195 members, including India, and its headquarters is in Rome, Italy.
