Current Context : The Indian Air Force recently rescued two foreign mountaineers stranded during the expedition to Chaukhamba-3 peak.
ABOUT CHAUKHAMBA PEAK:
- Location: Chaukhamba is part of the Garhwal Himalayas in Uttarakhand, west of the holy town of Badrinath.
- It consists of four peaks—Chaukhamba I, II, III, and IV with elevations ranging from 7,138 meters (Chaukhamba I) to 6,854 meters (Chaukhamba IV).
- Prominence: Chaukhamba I is the highest peak at 7,138 meters and serves as the eastern anchor of the Gangotri glacier.
- First climbed in 1952 by Swiss mountaineers Lucien George and Victor Russenberger.
