Current Context : Moidamsin in Assam’s Charaideo district have been recommended for inclusion in the UNESCO World Heritage List by its international advisory body International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS).

ABOUT INTERNATIONAL COUNCIL ON MONUMENTS AND SITES:

• Established in 1965 in Warsaw (Poland) as a result of the Venice Charter of 1964 and offers advice to UNESCO on World Heritage Sites.
• It is an international non-governmental organisation that works for the conservation and protection of cultural heritage places around the world.
• Headquartered in Charenton-le-Pont, France.

KEY FACTS ABOUT MOIDAMS

• The Moidams situated in Charaideo are the burial grounds of Ahom kings and queens.
• These were created by building an earth mound over a hollow vault constructed of brick, stone or earth, and topped by a shrine at the centre of an octagonal wall.
