Asiatic lion

Current Context : Recently, Six Asiatic lions have migrated from Gir Forest to the Barda Wildlife Sanctuary (BWS).

ABOUT ASIATIC LIONS

  • The Asiatic Lion are also known as the Persian Lion or Indian Lion.
  • They are member of the Panthera Leo Leo subspecies.
  • They are slightly smaller than African lions.
  • Lions have no particular breeding season.
  • IUCN status: Endangered
  • CITES: Appendix I
  • Wildlife (Protection) Act 1972: Schedule I and IV
  • Habitat: Only in Gir forest and other protected areas in Gujarat Saurashtra region.

ABOUT BARDA WILDLIFE SANCTUARY

  • Located in Gujarat.
  • Area falls into two districts, Porbandar and Jamnagar.
  • Flora: About 650 plant species includes – Gorad, Babul, Dhav, Rayan, Ber, Jamun, Amli, Dhudhlo, Bamboo.
  • Fauna: Leopard, Hyena, Wild boar, wolf, Jackal, blue bull, Rare and endangered spotted eagle and crested hawk eagle etc.
