Current Context : Recently, Six Asiatic lions have migrated from Gir Forest to the Barda Wildlife Sanctuary (BWS).
ABOUT ASIATIC LIONS
- The Asiatic Lion are also known as the Persian Lion or Indian Lion.
- They are member of the Panthera Leo Leo subspecies.
- They are slightly smaller than African lions.
- Lions have no particular breeding season.
- IUCN status: Endangered
- CITES: Appendix I
- Wildlife (Protection) Act 1972: Schedule I and IV
- Habitat: Only in Gir forest and other protected areas in Gujarat Saurashtra region.
ABOUT BARDA WILDLIFE SANCTUARY
- Located in Gujarat.
- Area falls into two districts, Porbandar and Jamnagar.
- Flora: About 650 plant species includes – Gorad, Babul, Dhav, Rayan, Ber, Jamun, Amli, Dhudhlo, Bamboo.
- Fauna: Leopard, Hyena, Wild boar, wolf, Jackal, blue bull, Rare and endangered spotted eagle and crested hawk eagle etc.
