Madras Mahajana Sabha

• The first organisation in the Madras Presidency to agitate for the rights of Indians was the Madras Native Association which was established by publicist Gazulu Lakshminarasu Chettyin 1852. This organisation did not survive for long and was eventually disbanded.

• Acharya Hemachandra was a 12th century (c. 1088  – c. 1172/1173 CE) Indian Jain saint, scholar, poet, mathematician, philosopher, yogi, grammarian,law theorist,historian.
• Starting in 1121, Hemachandra was involved in the construction of the Jain temple at Taranga. His influence on Kumarapala resulted in Jainism becoming the official religion of Gujarat and animal slaughter was banned in the state.
