Myopia, also known as short sightedness, occurs due to the lengthening of eye ball. With this defect, nearby objects can be seen clearly but distant objects cannot be seen clearly. The focal length of eye lens is reduced or the distance between eye lens and retina increases.
In myopia, the eye lens becomes too convex i.e. it’s converging power increases. It is because of more convergence produced by the eye lens that the rays start meeting before retina. Therefore, to decrease convergence a diverging lens called concave lens of appropriate power is used so that rays meet on the retina for the formation of image.
