In 1850, Raja Shamsher Singh succeeded as a minor to the gaddi. The British government then made an arrangement of three Wazirs of equal rank, having a number of subordinates.
This arrangement was made to reduce the powers of the Raja.
The 1857 uprising came as a great opportunity to the Raja to show his displeasure and resentment. He stopped paying tribute and treated officials passing through his territory with discourtesy.
