Introduction | Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are seventeen interrelated goals set by the United Nations, that balance the environmental, social, and economic dimensions to ensure sustainable development. Creation of human capital is paramount to not only plan but also carry out relevant development strategy. In this context, population dynamics, such as population growth, ageing and decline, migration and urbanization trends etc. are crucial inputs for better planning of development policies. These policies can be discussed under two categories: (i) Developing countries (ii) Developed countries.

Main Body | Population dynamics in developing countries Current population dynamics in developing countries such as India revolves around rapid population growth, high maternal and child mortality, unemployment, unequal spread of wealth, largely unplanned rapid urbanization etc. Development strategies should be in sync with current as well as future needs and should focus on: Reproductive and child health services, maternity benefit programs etc. keeping needs of working mothers in view. Skill development and employment opportunities to leverage youth potential. Dedicated policies to facilitate inter- and intra-country migration. Special infrastructure, pension schemes etc. for ageing population. Family planning education to slow population growth. Above steps, along with increased concentration of population in working age range, would enable countries to reap demographic bonus and jumpstart economic development. Additionally, migration will add to remittances, skill transfers and other benefits. Population dynamics in developed countries Currently, developed countries are experiencing rapid population ageing and even population decline in some cases like Japan. Associated risks include lifestyle diseases like depression, de-urbanization, shrinking manpower, declining economic activities etc. To address these risks, future development strategies should focus on: Investing in automation of jobs. Change in policies to arrest the population decline. Creating immigration policies to attract skilful people from other nations. Also, as per the circumstances of a particular country there is need of calibrated policy to take care of Diaspora.
Conclusion | The SDGs mention 169 targets which might be challenging to track in developing countries in absence of requisite parameters. Further, the SDGs lack adequate technology transfer, funding and accountability mechanisms. Also, special targets are needed in case of conflict countries such as Syria, Ukraine, Crimea etc . Thus, suitable strategies are required to not only meet the increasing needs and expectations of a changing population dynamics but also to modify current production and consumption patterns to achieve progressive and sustainable development. |
