Question: Explain how Non Co-operation Movement & civil disobedience Movement were different with each other ? 8 Marks (120 words)

Introduction

  • The Gandhian-inspired Non-Cooperation Movement (NCM) and Civil Disobedience Movement (CDM) were the two main movements in the Indian freedom struggle. But they were very different from one another.

Main Body

Differences Between Non- cooperation Movement and Civil Disobedience Movement

•       Aim•       To bring Hindus and Muslims together and achieve Swaraj, were the agendas of Non- cooperation Movement•       A movement of civil disobedience was started in order to achieve “Purna Swaraj,” or complete independence.
•       Methodology•       The non-cooperation movement sought to discourage any sort of cooperation with government. The Movement’s primary goals included title surrender and a boycott of government-run institutions like offices, courts, and schools.•       The Civil Disobedience Movement was aimed at breaking certain laws like the Salt Laws.

•       People also refused to pay taxes at some places.

•       Mass Participation•       large scale participation of Muslim working class in the Non-Cooperation movement as it co-incided with Khilafat Movement.

•       In the Non-Cooperation Movement, women did not participate on a large scale.

•       Labour uprisings also added to the movement.

•       The growing proximity of the Congress party & Hindu Mahasabha and british policy of divide and rule prevented the Muslims from participating in the Civil Disobedience Movement & congress growing differences with Muslim league.

•       Middle class looked disinterested.

•       But large scale participation of women is one of the most significant features of the Civil Disobedience Movement.

•       Participation from business class & peasants was huge

•       Geographical Spread•       It remained geographically confined to certain parts of India.•       The civil disobedience movement saw widespread geographical coverage and mass participation in comparison to the non-cooperation movement.
•       Withdrawal of the Movement•       Due to the Chauri-Chaura incident the movement was called off in 1922.•       The movement was withdrawn after the signing of the Gandhi-Irwin pact in 1931 for the first time & in second phase it never took pace but formally withdrawn in 1934 from wardha.
