Question: Write a short note on regional parties that existed in Himachal Pradesh and there present status. (8 Marks, 120 Words)

Answer: 

Himachal Pradesh is a small state and people are mostly inclined towards two major political parties of India i.e. Indian National Congress and Bharatiya Janata Party. Regional political parties have probably less or no significance in the Himachal politics. But still we see the formation and merger of few regional parties with respect to the two major political national parties.

Himachal Vikas Congress, HVC (Himalayan Development Congress)

  • HVC was formed when Sukh Ram and Anil Sharma split from the Indian National Congress after were expelled from the Congress party.
  • Anil Sharma was elected to the Rajya Sabha in 1998 as member of Himachal Vikas Congress.
  • Himachal Vikas Congress, entered into a post-poll alliance with the Bharatiya Janata Party and joined the government.

In 2004, HVC was merged with Congress party.

Himachal Kranti Party (HKP) or Himalayan Revolution Party

  • It was formed after the 1998 state assembly elections, when two Himachal Vikas Congress members of the assembly, Mansa Ram and Prakash Chaudhary, split to form HKP. HKP merged with Bharatiya Janata Party in 1999.

All India Tribes and Minorities Front

  • This is a political party in the Indian State of Himachal Pradesh. The party works for the issues which directly affects the Adivasi population. The party functioned under the leadership of Mangal Singh Negi.

Himachal Lokhit Party

  • The party was formed by few rebel political leaders of Bharatiya Janata Party just ahead of 2012 Himachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly Election.
  • This party was formed by Maheswar Singh of Kullu.
  • In 2012 elections this party has won 1 seat.
  • In August 2016, half of the party was merge into Bharatiya Janata Party and in October 2016, rest of its member joined Aam Aadmi Party.
  • Himachal Swabhiman Party
    • The party was founded by BJP ideologue, Govindacharya on 10 August 2011. The party was formed just ahead of Himachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly Elections 2012.

    Loktantrik Morcha Himachal Pradesh

    • LM (H.P) is a Democratic Front in Himachal Pradesh and was registered as a political party in 2003. In 2004 elections LM (HP) showed full support to BJP-led National Democratic Alliance. Merger with the Bharatiya Janata Party was also on the decision making list for LM (HP).
