Himachal Pradesh Administrative Services (HPAS) Examination

HPAS 2020 Eligibility Criteria:

HPAS is the most prestigious exam conducted by HPPSC. It recruits the top layer of the state bureaucracy. HPAS notification defines the HPAS eligibility criteria.

Nationality:

The candidate must be a citizen of India. An Indian citizen can join the HPAS and other state allied services.

Educational Qualification for HPAS: 

The minimum educational qualification essential to appear in the HPAS is a graduate degree from any recognised university. It does not mention any minimum percentage required in the bachelor’s degree course. The candidates appearing in the final year of their graduation course can also appear in the HPAS exam, but their examination process should end before the commencement of this exam. They have to produce the mark sheet of the qualifying exam after the exam ends or within two months of the exam.

Age limit for HPAS:

The age limit defined the HPAS notification published by HPPSC. The lower age limit is 21 years and the uppers age limit is 35 years. HPPSC counts the age from January 1 of the examination year. But there are relaxations provided to the candidates belonging to certain reserved categories.

Age Relaxation:

  • SC and ST of Himachal Pradesh: 5 years
  • OBC of Himachal Pradesh : 5 Years
  • Persons with disabilities and Children/Grand Children of Freedom and Fighters of Himachal Pradesh: 5 years
  • Age relaxation is also available to Ex-servicemen candidates of H.P. as per provisions in Rules/ Instructions of H.P. Govt.

The candidates should note that age, as entered the matriculation certificate, will only be considered for the above purpose.

There are two papers I (General Studies), II (Aptitude Test)

1. General Studies

  • General Science
  • Himachal Pradesh History, geography, art & culture, political and socio-economic calendar calendar

  • Indian National Movement
  • Economic and Social Development and it’s other co-variants such as sustainable development, social sector growth, social sector initiatives, inclusion, demographics, and poverty etc.
  • Environmental ecology, Climate change, biodiversity- National and International; and do not demand s subject specialization
  • Social, economic and physical geography both of world and India
  • Politics and Governance including the Indian political system, constitution, RTI, Right Issues, Panchayat Raj, and Public Policy etcetera

2. Aptitude Test

  • Comprehension and passage writing
  • Interpersonal skills including communication skills
  • Logical reasoning and analytical ability
  • Decision making and problem-solving
  • General mental ability
  • Basic numeracy (numbers and their relations, orders of magnitude etc. (Class X level), Data interpretation (charts, graphs, tables, data sufficiency, etc. – Class X level)
  • English Language comprehension skills (Class X level)

Hindi Paper Syllabus

This paper will test the Hindi in Devnagri script:

  1. Translation- English to Hindi
  2. Translation- Hindi to English
  3. Explanation of passages in hindi
  4. Composition writing, Idioms, Corrections

Essay Paper Syllabus

The candidates have to write 900 words essay on any two topics out of the given choices in the question paper. The paper is designed to check the ability of the candidates to express their views coherently and produce a well-argued piece. It is advised to compose an original piece for the essay, along with correct usage of grammar. The candidates should have knowledge in the following:

  • Historical facts and Understanding

 

English Paper Syllabus

The objective of this paper is to test the understanding of the English language and its usage. The candidate is expected to be well-versed with the usage of English. The topics are as follows

Hindi Paper Syllabus

  • The topics of the Hindi paper are as follows

Essay Paper Syllabus

Essay paper is designed to test the knowledge and awareness of the candidate regarding the subject and the society as a whole. The topics can be included from the following areas

  • current affairs
  • socio-political issues
  • socio-economic issues
  • aspects of culture and history
  • Reflective topics will be given to test the candidates’ understanding of these issues and their flair for expressing themselves in the English or in the Hindi language.

The candidates are required to attempt 2 Essays, choosing one each from Section A and B in about 900 words each.

  • Geography of Himachal Pradesh: Relief, Drainage, Vegetation cover and types.
  • Climate and climatic zones in Himachal Pradesh.
  • Geographical Regions of Himachal Pradesh (Shiwalik, Doons and Low Valleys, Outer Valleys of Sub Himalaya, Mid Hill Tracts of High Himalaya, High hills and Valleys and Inner Zones).

Optional Papers – HPAS Main Examination

HPPSC provides a list of 31 optional subjects out of which any 2 papers have to be chosen by the candidates. So, along with 6 compulsory papers, any 2 subjects from the following list have to be chosen for the Main Examination:
