New Wetlands in state

Rewalsar in Mandi and Khajjiar in Chamba have been declared ‘National Importance Wetlands’ by the environment ministry for promoting their conservation. Himachal Pradesh State Wetlands Authority (HPSWA) said the state currently has three Ramsar sites (wetlands of international importance) – Pong Dam in Kangra, Renuka in Sirmaur and Chandrataal in Lahaul and Spiti.Read More

National Green Tribunal (NGT) has constituted a joint committee to inspect Mohan Meakin Private Limited, Kasauli-based plant, that had allegedly dumped effluents into a natural source (Kasauli Kund) as a result of which water got polluted. The state government has withdrawn the transfer orders of Sanjay Kundu, Director General of Police, as Principal Secretary Ayush, thus reinstating him as the Director General of Police. Kundu was removed as Himachal DGP and shifted as Secretary, Ayush Department, following Himachal Pradesh High Court order over allegations of interference in an ongoing criminal probe and attempting to pressurise a businessman who claimed to have received a threat to his life from his partners. State transport has become the first department in the country to adopt e-vehicles. Along with this, 3,000 diesel buses of HRTC are being replaced with e-buses in a phased manner. Under the Rs 680 crore Rajiv Gandhi Self-Employment Start-up Scheme, 50 per cent subsidy for the purchase of e-taxis is being provided. Halda fest

The Halda festival celebrations began in the Gahar and Tinan valleys of Lahaul and Spiti district. To celebrate the festival, villagers cut thin cedar branches into pieces and tie them into bundles to make a torch called ‘halda’. The torch is lit at a house where villagers gather to perform various rituals, besides singing and dancing. The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) will widen the strategically important Sumdo-Kaza-Gramphu highway at a cost of Rs 1,400 crore to ensure better connectivity to the Spiti region of Lahaul and Spiti district from Manali and Lahaul. It will be a double-lane highway. The BRO has already started the exercise to widen the road after getting approval of funds from the Central Government.
