Current Context : Australia’s Victoria has recorded 71 confirmed cases of legionnaires’ disease and a woman died from the disease.

ABOUT

  • Legionnaires’ disease is a severe form of pneumonia caused by the bacterium Legionella pneumophila. It was first identified in 1976.
  • Transmission : It is contracted through inhaling aerosolized water droplets contaminated with Legionella bacteria, not through person-to-person contact.
  • Symptoms : Fever, chills, cough, chest pain, and pneumonia. Additional symptoms may include gastrointestinal issues and confusion.
  • Legionnaires’ disease is caused by the Legionella bacteria, which can only be found in natural bodies of water such as lakes and hot springs, as well as spas and some water cooling systems.
