QUESTION: What do you mean by democratization of United Nations? (4 marks/ 60 words)
The changing nature of the international system in the 21st century is characterized by the shift from uni-polarity to multipolarity, structural changes like the increase in world population and the rise of developing and third world nations. All of these led to the demand for the democratization of the United Nation (UN).
The Security Council is a key body in the current UN reform agenda and following are the reasons for demand of democratization of UNSC.
Inadequate Regional representation: China is the only Asian country among the five permanent members of UNSC and the whole continent of Africa does not have a single member in P-5.
Changing Geopolitics: It has been more than 70 years since the foundation of UNSC and during this period, the geopolitical realities have changed drastically and the current composition of the U.N.S.C. failed to represent the current geopolitical condition. e.g. Russia-Ukraine crisis.
Question of Veto Power: The veto power is grossly misused by the permanent members in their own national interest.
Transparency and Working Methods: The non-transparent and non-consultative way and the undemocratic nature of UNSC within the supposedly democratic UN has compromised the overall credibility of the United Nations.
Conclusion: The expansion of the Security Council should be determined on the basis of the principles of equitable geographical distribution and sovereign equality of states.
